Brian Bowles is the new WEC Bantamweight champion after he stopped Miguel Angel Torres in the very first round last night. Coming into the fight Torres was a red hot favourite but Bowles turned the odds upside down has he had Torres in trouble from the outset. Torres recovered well though and began chasing Bowles with relentless right-hand shots.Bowles capitalized on Torres aggression and scored with a accurate uppercut and followed Torres to the ground. Torres tried to secure an armbar, but Bowles put an end to that idea with a brutal punch from a standing position. Six unanswered punches to the face later, and the fight was called by Josh Rosenthal in favor of the new WEC bantamweight champion.
Dominick Cruz scored an upset decision victory over Joseph Benavidez in the co-main event of the evening and will get the first crack at taking the belt away from Bowles. The decision was a close one, but Cruz edged Benavidez in the takedown department and was able to avoid most of the unorthodox striking techniques Benavidez employed.
